Methodology
Overall equipment effectiveness multiplies three independently measured factors, each expressed against planned production time. Availability = run time ÷ planned production time, where run time is planned time minus all downtime, planned or not. Performance = (ideal cycle time × total units produced) ÷ run time — the share of running time spent producing at the rate the equipment is capable of, which is where small stops and reduced speed appear. Quality = good units ÷ total units produced, counting a unit as good only if it needed no rework. The three are multiplied rather than averaged, which is why three individually respectable factors produce a much lower combined figure. Each factor's loss is also converted back into minutes so the three are directly comparable in the same unit, and the weakest factor is named rather than left to inspection. Excluded: planned non-production time is outside the calculation by definition, so a plant that runs few shifts can report a high figure; changeover treatment varies between plants and is whatever you classified it as here; and this says nothing about whether the equipment should be run harder at all. A figure is only comparable with itself over time on the same equipment and the same definitions — never between plants, and never against a published target. You supply every input: this site holds no factory cost data, capacity figures, yields, cycle times or industry benchmarks, and never estimates them for you.
