Methodology

Available minutes per day = shifts × (hours per shift × sixty minutes − breaks − planned stoppages). Takt time = available minutes per day ÷ customer demand per day, expressed in seconds. It is the rhythm demand sets, not a measurement of the line. Cycle-to-takt ratio = current cycle time ÷ takt time. Below takt the line can meet demand within planned hours; above it, demand cannot be met without more time, more capacity, or less work content per unit. Spare seconds per unit is takt minus cycle time, which is the buffer a station has before a small disturbance turns into a late order. Shortfall units per day converts an over-takt cycle time into the units the day would end short, assuming the line runs the whole available time. Excluded: scrap and rework (a line running at takt but scrapping output does not ship at takt), unplanned downtime, changeovers between products, mix effects, and any station-level imbalance — takt is a single number for a whole line.
