The fleet dictates the dock, not the other way round
Arrangements suit different vehicles. A raised platform matched to trailer bed height works well for a fleet of consistent articulated vehicles and badly for vans, tail-lift deliveries and flatbeds. A ground-level door with a ramp suits mixed traffic and wheeled plant driving into a trailer, but slows high-volume pallet movements. Sites that receive both patterns need both provisions, and the mistake is choosing one arrangement because it is what the developer built. Survey what actually arrives over a representative period, including couriers, waste collections and contractor vehicles, before deciding what to specify.
Count docks against the peak hour, not the daily total
Dividing daily loads by the working day understates requirement badly, because arrivals cluster around carrier schedules and shift changes. The number that matters is how many vehicles can be present simultaneously and how long each occupies its position, including the time to complete paperwork and checks rather than just to move the pallets. When positions run short the consequences appear outside as queuing on the approach or the highway, and inside as loads being staged in aisles. Both are more expensive than the extra door would have been, and neither can be corrected without construction.
Mixed fleets and the arrangements that bridge them
Most manufacturing sites cannot standardise on one vehicle type, so the arrangement must cope with variation in bed height, length and access. Adjustable equipment at the dock, a dedicated ground-level position for awkward vehicles, and enough approach length for the longest vehicle to align without multiple manoeuvres all reduce the friction. Each addition brings maintenance obligations and its own inspection requirements. Weather, sealing and the condition of what passes through
The dock is a hole in the building envelope that stands open for much of the day. Heat loss, water ingress, wind, dust and the entry of pests are all consequences, and they matter more where the product is sensitive or the interior is conditioned. Sealing arrangements, canopies, fast-acting doors and a small buffer space between the dock and the production area address different parts of this. The requirement should be written in terms of what must be kept out and what conditions must be maintained inside, so a designer can select an approach that suits the site.
The dock edge is the most dangerous line in the building
Falls from the dock edge, vehicles moving off during loading, people crushed between vehicle and building, and handling equipment driving into an unsecured trailer are recurring and severe. Safety regulators across jurisdictions treat loading operations as a high-risk activity with specific expectations for vehicle restraint, driver control, edge protection and communication between driver and loader. Those arrangements have to be designed, documented and enforced by competent people at your site, and reviewed when the fleet or the layout changes. - What should we check about docks before taking on an existing building?
- Look at the approach and turning space rather than only the doors, because a dock a vehicle cannot align with is useless. Check the level relative to the vehicles you use, the condition and inspection history of any levelling equipment, the drainage of the approach, and whether canopies and seals exist. Confirm what happens when two vehicles arrive together, and whether waiting vehicles would obstruct the site or the public road. Verify all of it on site during a working day, not from drawings.
- How do we handle drivers who are not employed by us?
- Treat visiting drivers as the least-informed people on site and design around that. That means a defined arrival procedure, a safe place to wait that is not beside their vehicle or in a traffic route, clear instruction about where they may and may not go, and an agreed method of signalling when loading is complete.
