A vessel gives notice of arrival, waits at an anchorage or holding point if the berth is occupied, then takes a pilot and tugs for the final approach. Availability of any of these can delay a call independently of terminal readiness, and weather routinely closes the movement window even when everything ashore is ready. Berth allocation follows the terminal's window agreements with the lines rather than arrival order. A ship that has lost its window can wait while a punctual vessel berths ahead of it, which is contractual rather than unfair.
Stowage planning and why the plan moves
Stowage balances the ship's stability and strength with the order of the ports ahead, so heavy units go low, hazardous parcels are segregated, and cargo for the next call sits where it can be reached. Late cancellations, weight corrections and hazardous declarations force replanning, sometimes after work has begun. This is why a confirmed booking is not a confirmed position on board. Cargo that arrives late, weighs more than declared or lacks a complete dangerous goods declaration is the easiest thing for a planner to remove.
Securing, lashing and verified mass
Containers are secured with twistlocks, rods and turnbuckles according to an approved securing manual, and the loading computer relies on the declared mass of every unit being accurate. International rules adopted through the International Maritime Organization require the shipper to provide a verified gross mass before a container is loaded, and terminals will not load a unit without one. Understating weight is not a paperwork error but a stability question, and it is one of the few grounds on which a terminal will refuse cargo outright without further discussion.
Sailing windows and the knock-on down the string
Once work finishes, a departure still needs pilots, tugs and, in tidal ports, sufficient water. A ship that misses its window waits for the next, and because a liner rotation is a fixed string of calls, that delay is carried forward and often absorbed by cutting time at a later port. The practical implication for shippers is that a schedule change downstream may have originated several ports earlier. Watching only the local call gives very little warning of an omitted port.
