Compatibility of the unit comes before the timetable
Maritime containers, swap bodies, tank containers and semi-trailers each need particular gripping points. A standard box lifts from its corner castings, a swap body needs grappler arms, and only a trailer built and certified for lifting can be craned at all. Sending a non-craneable trailer to a terminal without a ramp produces an expensive round trip. Confirm the unit type with the terminal, not only with the rail operator. Acceptance lists are published for a reason, and equipment substitutions made by a haulier at short notice are a frequent cause of refusal.
Lifting equipment defines the site's real capability
A gantry spanning several tracks can serve a whole train without moving; reach stackers are flexible but work unit by unit and need aisle space. The choice affects how long a train occupies the terminal, which in turn affects how many services the site can accept in a day and how tightly your cut-off is enforced. Heavy, tall or unusually long units are the first casualties of tight equipment. Where cargo is out of gauge, agree the handling method in advance and expect a separate charge, since it interrupts the standard cycle.
Train paths are scarcer than terminal capacity
A rail service needs an allocated path across the network, and paths are assigned by the infrastructure manager under rules that predate any individual booking. When a train loses its path it does not simply leave later; it may wait for the next viable slot, which can be a very different proposition. This is the structural difference between road and rail reliability. Trucks absorb small delays individually, whereas a rail service absorbs them collectively, so a single late unit at the terminal gate is a decision point for the whole train.
Custody and evidence at the point of transfer
Modal handovers are where damage is discovered and where responsibility is most often disputed. Interchange records, seal numbers and photographs taken at acceptance are the practical defence, because once a unit has moved on, attributing a dent or a broken seal to a particular leg becomes guesswork. Agree in the contract who inspects, what constitutes acceptance, and how a discrepancy is notified. Terminals act on the instructions of the party that contracted them, so the cargo owner's interest needs to be written in rather than assumed.

- Can any semi-trailer be lifted onto a train?
- No. Only trailers built and certified with reinforced lifting points can be craned, and the terminal will refuse others. Non-craneable trailers need a horizontal loading system or a drive-on wagon, which is a different service with different sites, so check the equipment before booking the path.
- Why is intermodal cheaper on some routes and not others?
- The saving comes from the long middle leg. Where the rail or barge distance is long, volumes are steady and the two road legs are short, the transfer cost is easily absorbed. On short distances with lengthy drayage at both ends, the handling and waiting time cancel the advantage.
- What happens to my unit if it misses the train?
- It waits at the terminal for the next departure with space, which may be the following day or later on thinner corridors. Storage may start accruing and any onward booking will need to be rescheduled, so cut-off times deserve more respect in rail planning than in road planning.
