A network can move goods straight from origin to destination or route them through a consolidation point where loads are rebuilt. Direct movement removes handling and adds vehicles; consolidation fills vehicles and adds a stop. Density decides the structure
Work out the volume per destination area per despatch day. Where a destination reliably generates enough to fill a vehicle, sending it straight there is simpler, quicker and involves less handling. Where it does not, the choice is between running a part-empty vehicle and consolidating with other traffic. Density changes as a business grows, and structures rarely change with it. A network built when volume was thin often keeps routing everything through a hub long after several destinations could support direct journeys, and the review is worth doing whenever the customer base shifts materially.
Most real networks are hybrids
The usual design sends the dense lanes directly and routes the rest through consolidation. That combination captures the efficiency of both, and it needs a clear rule for which consignments qualify for a direct journey, applied consistently rather than by daily judgement. Without that rule, planners protect direct journeys for their easiest work and push awkward consignments through the hub, which loads the shared network with exactly the traffic it handles least well. Understand how each structure fails
The two structures fail in different shapes. A direct network fails one journey at a time, and the consequence is contained. That concentration is not an argument against the structure; it is an argument for planning around it.
