What does a parcel network need from an item before it can be sorted and delivered without anyone touching it by hand?

Parcel networks handle enormous numbers of individually addressed items rather than a smaller number of consignments. Automation is what makes that possible, and automation imposes conditions: an item that machines cannot read, grip or convey has to be worked by hand, and hand-worked items are the expensive exception the whole system is built to avoid.

The item is the unit, not the shipment

Where freight networks track a consignment, parcel networks track each piece separately. Every item receives its own identifier at induction and is routed independently, so ten cartons sent together may travel on different vehicles and arrive on different rounds. That granularity is what allows enormous volumes to be absorbed, and it is also why a shipper who needs pieces to stay together must say so explicitly.

Machines set the specification

Sorters expect items within defined size and weight bands, with a flat base, a rigid form and a barcode positioned where a scanner can read it. Anything outside that envelope becomes non-conveyable: long tubes, soft sacks, unboxed items, wheels, and packages whose label is wrapped around a corner. These are diverted to manual handling, arrive later and attract surcharges, and the fix is almost always in the packing rather than in the service chosen.

The address is the routing instruction

Sortation depends on resolving an address to a delivery round before the item physically reaches the area. Incomplete addresses, missing unit numbers, wrong postal codes and unreachable recipients push items into exception handling, where a human has to work out what a machine could not. Contact details matter for the same reason: most recovery from a failed delivery happens by contacting the recipient, not by re-reading the label.

The doorstep is where the network meets reality

The final leg is the least predictable, because it depends on someone being present or somewhere safe existing. Networks respond with delivery choices made before or during transit: nominated neighbours, safe places, collection points, parcel lockers and rescheduling. Each of these exists to convert a failed attempt into a completed one, since repeat attempts consume a disproportionate share of the cost of delivery.

Returns run the same network backwards

Consumer returns generate a flow from many individual origins back to a few destinations, which is the reverse of the outbound shape and much harder to route efficiently. Drop-off points aggregate returns so that collections happen from a smaller number of places, and prepaid labels let the item enter the network without an origin booking. What happens to the goods once they arrive back is a warehousing matter.

Why do some parcels attract a surcharge for their shape?
Because they cannot pass through automated sortation and must be handled manually. Length, irregular form, soft packaging and unreadable labels all force items off the belt, and manual working costs far more per item than machine sorting.
Will pieces sent together arrive together?
Not necessarily. Each item is routed independently once it is scanned, so multi-piece shipments can split across vehicles and rounds. Where pieces must stay as a set, they need to be consolidated into one unit or sent on a freight service instead.
