Choosing where road becomes rail, or where a sea leg ends and an inland leg begins, sets the shape of the whole journey. A handover placed at a congested port adds dwell that no amount of speed elsewhere recovers; one placed at an inland terminal close to the consignee may shorten the road leg dramatically. Planners work backwards from the delivery constraint and place the interfaces where they cause the least damage.
One transport document covering the whole carriage
A through document issued for the complete journey records the carriage from origin to destination, in contrast to a separate consignment note, bill of lading or air waybill for each leg. That matters practically because the goods are described once and tracked against one reference, and it matters legally because the applicable liability regime may differ depending on the mode a loss occurred in. Who issues that document and takes responsibility as a contracting carrier is a freight forwarding question.
Sequencing modes so their strengths line up
Each mode has a natural role: sea or rail for the long, dense middle portion, road for collection and delivery, air where a segment must be compressed. The art is arranging them so the slowest leg is the one with the most tolerance, and so no expensive leg waits on a cheap one. A costly air sector that lands into a closed receiving bay wastes exactly what it was bought for.
Interfaces accumulate time and damage
Every mode change is a lift, a document check and a queue. Cargo that is not in a standardised unit is rehandled piece by piece, which multiplies the exposure. Buffer time has to be built into each join, because a leg that arrives late does not simply delay itself; it can miss a departure that runs infrequently.
How it differs from intermodal working
Intermodal describes the physical arrangement in which one loading unit crosses several modes untouched. Multimodal describes a journey performed under one overall arrangement, whether or not a single unit is used throughout. A movement can be both, and most containerised door-to-door shipments are, but cargo transferred piece by piece between modes is multimodal without being intermodal.
