Fixed conveying answers a specific problem: goods that must travel the same route, in large numbers, all day. It removes carrying and driving from that route entirely and replaces them with a machine that will keep working until something jams. In exchange, the route becomes permanent, the floor beneath it becomes unusable, and the operation acquires a rate ceiling it did not have before.

A conveyor is a commitment to one route

Once installed, the line dictates where work must start and finish, which floor is available and how people cross the building. That is acceptable where the flow is stable and heavy, and costly where the operation reorganises frequently, because moving a line is close to installing a new one. Crossings, gates and lifting sections mitigate the division of the floor, and each of them is also a point where the line can stop.

Sorting is a series of decisions taken at speed

A sorter reads an identifier, tracks the item along the line and diverts it into the correct destination at exactly the right moment. Every part of that chain can fail: an unreadable label, a package that will not track, a divert that fires late. Because the read is the foundation, label quality, placement and print standards do more for sorter performance than mechanical adjustment does, and they are largely determined upstream at the packing bench or by the supplier.

Rated speed is not achieved throughput

Manufacturers quote a rate under ideal conditions with evenly spaced items. In service, throughput is limited by how quickly items can be introduced to the line, by the gaps the sorter requires between them, by destinations that fill up and stop accepting, and by items that failed to divert and must go round again. Sizing therefore starts from the induction points and the destination count rather than from the headline figure, and it allows for a share of the flow being handled twice.

Exceptions need somewhere to go

Items that cannot be read, do not fit the profile, or belong to no live destination will occur every day. Without a designated reject lane and someone working it, they accumulate at the end of the line or, worse, recirculate until the loop congests. The volume arriving in that lane is one of the more useful diagnostics a site has, because a rise in it points directly at labelling, packing or data problems upstream.

The line has to be maintained around the operation

Belts, rollers, motors and photo-eyes wear, and the failure of one small component can halt an entire flow, so planned maintenance needs a window that the operation genuinely gives up. Noise is a real consideration for the people working alongside it, as are guarding, emergency stops and safe access for clearing jams, since reaching into a running machine is exactly what a frustrated operator will try. Any of this is easier to specify before installation than to retrofit afterwards.

What most often limits a sorter in practice?
Induction and destinations rather than the sorting mechanism. Items have to be introduced singly at a controlled spacing, and every destination that fills up removes capacity until it is cleared, so both ends of the machine constrain the middle.
Is conveying worth it in a small facility?
Sometimes, in short sections rather than as a network: a takeaway line from packing to despatch, or a link between two levels, can remove a great deal of carrying. Building a full loop in a site whose layout will change within a few years rarely repays the loss of floor.
