The corrugator sets the tempo for everything downstream

Board making runs continuously, changing paper reels and flute combinations on the move, and every stop is expensive. Scheduling therefore builds long board runs by grade and width, which is not necessarily what converting or customers want. Converting machines then take those sheets and cut, crease, print and glue them into cases at their own pace. Fibre quality also degrades with repeated recycling, so grades and virgin content are chosen for the strength a specific case actually needs.
