Panel utilisation is the number behind every quotation

Where a fabricator's capital actually goes

Capital sits in drilling, imaging, plating lines, lamination presses and electrical test, and in the effluent treatment plant that permits any of it to operate. Equipment is expensive and slow to install, and plating in particular cannot be idled cheaply because chemistry must be maintained whether or not panels are flowing. That combination pushes fabricators towards running hard and quoting to fill capacity, which is why prices soften quickly whenever demand dips. Assessing a fabricator means examining utilisation, permit position and the age of plating and treatment infrastructure rather than headline capacity claims.

Why does a small change in board outline change the price so much?
Because boards are built on a standard production panel and priced by how many images fit on it. Growing a board slightly can reduce the count per panel while the cost of processing that panel stays roughly unchanged, so unit cost jumps. The logic works in reverse too: trimming a few millimetres, or rotating the outline, sometimes adds an image per panel. Fabricators will usually share the panel layout on request, and asking early costs a designer nothing.
What does a fabricator's electrical test actually verify?
It checks continuity and isolation of the finished copper against the design netlist, catching opens, shorts and some plating faults. It does not confirm impedance, layer registration, hole wall quality or long-term reliability, which are assessed through coupons, cross-sections and separate measurements. Buyers of demanding boards should specify what evidence they expect with each shipment, since a passing electrical test on its own is a weaker assurance than many purchasers assume.
Should bare boards be sourced near the assembler or near the designer?
Near the assembler in most cases, because boards are cheap to ship relative to value and the fabricator's real interface is with the assembly process: surface finish, solderability, moisture handling and panel format all matter downstream. Design proximity matters during development, when fast iteration and direct conversation with process engineers save weeks. Many firms therefore prototype locally and move volume production to a fabricator close to the assembly site.
