The hard part of finding a factory is not locating companies; directories are full of them. It is separating the firms that own the process your part needs from the traders, brokers and general engineering shops whose websites describe capabilities they subcontract. A candidate list assembled from search results and exhibition badges tends to collapse under the first technical question. Discovery works when the search starts from the process and the part family rather than from geography or company size.

Search by process and part family, not by industry label
A company described as a metal fabricator may do laser cutting and folding but no welding of your alloy; a plastics moulder may run commodity resin all day and have never handled a glass-filled engineering grade. Define what you need in process terms — the forming route, the material class, the part envelope, the tolerance band, the secondary operations — and search against that. The most useful qualifying question is not whether a firm can make your part but which parts closely resembling it they already make, for whom, and in what quantities.
Telling a maker from an intermediary
Traders and agents present as manufacturers and are often useful, but you need to know which you are dealing with because the risks differ. Signs worth checking: whether the technical answers come from someone who can discuss cycle time and tooling, whether the address is a plant or an office, whether photographs show equipment consistent with the claimed capability, whether certification is held in the same legal name as the quoting entity, and whether they will name the equipment your part would run on. An intermediary that acknowledges what it is can be a good partner; one pretending otherwise cannot.
Where credible candidates actually come from
Industry-specific associations and standards bodies list members who had to demonstrate something to join. Machine tool and material suppliers know which plants run the equipment your part needs. Existing suppliers of adjacent processes will name their peers. National industrial development and export promotion agencies maintain sector directories with more substance than general marketplaces. Your own engineers may recognise firms from previous employers. Each of these routes produces a smaller list than an online search and a much higher proportion of firms worth an enquiry. Peer references carry particular weight because a plant risks its own reputation by naming a firm that later disappoints, and it will not do so casually.
Filtering before you spend anyone's time
A structured pre-screen protects both sides. Ask for the process list with equipment types, the part families already produced, the material grades routinely handled, certification held and by which body, approximate size and shift pattern, whether any of the work would be subcontracted, and their view on the quantities you are considering. A supplier that cannot answer that in writing will not manage a specification pack. This stage also filters out firms for whom your volume is far too small or far too large, both of which end badly. Keep the screen short enough that a busy sales engineer can complete it without escalating internally.
The candidate that looks perfect and is already full
Technical fit is only half the screen. A plant may run exactly your process, hold the right approvals, and have no intention of taking new work because its capacity is committed to larger customers. Signals include long quotation turnaround, reluctance to discuss delivery, high minimum quantities relative to their apparent size, and evasiveness about current utilisation. Establishing early whether you would be a welcome customer or a marginal one saves months, and where you would be marginal, the answer is not to persuade them but to find a plant where your volume matters.
