What is this last check genuinely capable of catching, and what are we wrongly relying on it for?
The last station before dispatch carries a reputation it cannot live up to. It sees the part only in its finished state, so internal features, process history and anything buried under assembly are beyond its reach. What it can do well is confirm identity, quantity, condition, documentation and the handful of characteristics that survive to the surface. Treating it as a safety net for everything upstream is how plants end up shipping defects they had already measured.

The finished part hides most of what could be wrong
By the time an item reaches dispatch, the evidence of how it was made has largely disappeared. A weld is under paint, a bond is inside a housing, a heat treatment left no visible trace, and an incorrect torque looks identical to a correct one. Final checking therefore verifies a narrow band of characteristics: what can be seen, measured externally, weighed or functionally exercised. Naming that band explicitly is more useful than any amount of diligence at the station, because it tells the plant which characteristics must be secured earlier and can never be recovered here.
Most escapes at this stage are administrative, not dimensional
Plants that examine their own complaints usually find a striking pattern: wrong quantity, wrong revision, wrong label, mixed variants in one carton, missing certificate, correct part in the wrong customer's packaging. These are failures of identity and paperwork rather than of manufacture, and they escape because inspection concentrates on the part while the error lives in what surrounds it. Building the label, the count, the documentation and the packing specification into the final check catches a class of problem that no amount of dimensional attention would ever find. A separate count of complaints by type, kept for a year, usually settles the argument about where attention belongs.
Release is a decision with a name attached
Somebody permits the consignment to leave, and it is worth being clear who. Release should depend on the required records existing and being complete, not merely on the parts looking right, which means the releaser needs authority to hold a shipment that a commercial colleague has already promised. In practice that authority is tested at month end. Where release is delegated to dispatch staff who have no view of the quality records, the check degenerates into counting boxes. Where it sits with quality but nobody is available at night, shipments quietly go without it.
Functional test is the one place where the finished item speaks
Where the product does something measurable — runs, seals, holds pressure, passes current, moves under load — an end-of-line test is the only check that exercises the whole assembly as the customer will. It is worth investing in for exactly that reason, and worth designing so that it covers the configuration actually built rather than a nominal variant. Its limits deserve the same honesty as the rest: a short test at ambient conditions demonstrates the item works now, not that it will survive service, and treating a passed test as proof of durability is a recurring and expensive assumption.
When the last station starts sorting, something upstream has broken
A final check that regularly rejects material is a signal, not a success. Every part it stops has already absorbed the full cost of manufacture, so a high catch rate is an expensive way of being right. Track what the station finds by cause and feed it back to the operation responsible, with the value of the scrapped work attached, because that figure is what justifies fixing the upstream process. Plants that celebrate the number of defects caught at dispatch have usually stopped asking why the defects reached dispatch at all.

- Can final inspection replace checks earlier in the process?
- Only for characteristics that remain observable on the finished item, which is a smaller set than most people assume. Anything internal, anything about process history, and anything that assembly covers up cannot be recovered at dispatch at any price. The other argument against it is economic: a fault found at the end has already consumed all the value the part will ever carry, so moving detection earlier is worth money even when both checks would find the same thing.
- Who should hold authority to release a shipment?
- Someone able to see whether the required records are complete and willing to stop a lorry, which usually means quality rather than dispatch. The arrangement is only real if it survives pressure, so test it deliberately: ask what happened the last time a consignment was held on the final day of a period. If the answer involves a verbal override that left no trace, the authority is nominal and the records will not support you in a dispute.
- What should be checked besides the parts themselves?
- Quantity against the order, part number and revision against what was ordered rather than what was made, labelling and its language, packaging against any customer specification, and the documents that must travel with the goods. Mixed variants within a pallet deserve particular attention because they are easy to create and hard for a customer to unpick. This administrative band is where a large share of complaints originate, yet it is routinely left out of the inspection instruction.
