Every racking configuration is an answer to one question: how many loads are you willing to move in order to reach the one you want. Systems that put a single pallet between the aisle and the operator waste floor space and never obstruct an order; systems that stack loads behind one another recover that floor and impose a retrieval sequence. Choosing between them is a stock-profile decision that later becomes very expensive to revisit.

Selectivity is the axis everything sits on
Single-deep racking gives immediate access to every load and consumes the most aisle; double-deep halves the aisles but requires a reach truck with extended forks and accepts that one pallet blocks another. Deeper systems continue the trade until whole lanes are dedicated to a single product. Because selectivity governs how many product codes a building can hold conveniently, the decision follows directly from how wide the range is and how quickly each line turns.
Aisle width and the truck fleet are one decision
Counterbalance trucks need generous aisles; reach trucks work in narrower ones; articulated and turret machines work in aisles barely wider than the load, but they need very flat floors, guidance in the aisle and operators trained on that specific equipment. Committing to a narrow configuration therefore commits the site to a fleet, to floor tolerances and to a maintenance relationship for years. Widening an aisle later means removing racking, so the fleet question is settled before the steel is ordered.
Dense systems and the way stock rotates
Drive-in racking places lanes several loads deep and is worked from one face, so stock issues in reverse of the order it went in. Push-back holds loads on trolleys that roll forward as the front one is removed, behaving the same way. Pallet-flow uses inclined rollers loaded at one end and picked at the other, which issues the oldest load first and suits products with a shelf life. In each case, sharing a lane between different product codes destroys the benefit, so lane allocation is the discipline that makes dense racking work.
The floor and the roof are part of the specification
Racking transfers concentrated loads into the slab, so floor thickness, flatness and joint condition are structural inputs rather than finishing details. Above, the configuration has to respect sprinkler coverage, and dense or clad systems may require protection within the racking itself, which is settled with the fire engineer before layout is fixed. Retrofitting either of these into an installed system is disruptive enough to justify getting it right during design.
Damage, inspection and the duty to act
Uprights are struck by trucks, and a damaged upright can lose a significant part of its capacity without looking dramatic. Operators are expected to run an inspection regime, to have someone competent assess damage found, and to unload and isolate any component that fails assessment until it is repaired or replaced by the supplier. Load notices stating the permitted configuration should be displayed and honoured, because a rack loaded beyond its design has no visible warning before it fails.
