The floor surface and the puddle everyone steps over
Slips and trips remain among the most frequent causes of lost-time injury in manufacturing, and the contributing conditions are almost always known to the people working there. A machine that drips coolant is mopped daily for years without anybody raising a work order for the seal. Set the rule the other way round: a recurring spill is a maintenance fault, not a cleaning task, and mopping it is a temporary measure with a work order attached. Absorbent stations near known leak points, prompt spill response and drainage that actually drains are the physical basics; the discipline is refusing to normalise the source.
Swarf, dust and the material worth recovering
Machining chips, grinding dust, powder residues and trimmings are both a hazard and a material stream. Combustible dust accumulating on beams and ductwork is a recognised explosion risk that builds invisibly above head height, which is why high-level cleaning needs to be scheduled rather than left to whoever notices. Machine-internal cleaning particularly needs assigning, since it falls between operators who are not permitted inside the guard and fitters who assume production handles it. Routes, egress and the pallet parked in the aisle
Marked pedestrian routes, forklift lanes and fire exits are only real if they are kept clear, and the first thing to occupy them is always a pallet placed there temporarily. Temporary becomes permanent within a day. The practical controls are marked and labelled floor storage locations so that material has a legitimate place to go, a rule that anything outside a marked location is challenged, and a supervisor walk that checks routes at the start of each shift. Blocked egress and obstructed extinguisher or isolation access are the findings that turn an inspection from advisory into enforcement.
Auditing without turning it into theatre
Announced monthly inspections produce a plant that is clean on inspection day. Short, frequent, unannounced walks by rotating people, scored against a specific written standard with photographs of the expected condition, produce something closer to the truth. Score the conditions that matter — access, spills, high-level accumulation, storage discipline, machine guarding visibility — and not the alignment of the tape on the floor. Findings need owners and dates like any other action. Where the same finding recurs, the standard is probably unachievable with the resources available, which is a management decision rather than a supervisory failing.

The mistake is outsourcing machine cleaning entirely, which saves a few minutes of operator time and removes the plant's most frequent, most detailed look at its own equipment.
- How much shift time should be allowed for cleaning?
- Enough to complete the defined tasks, scheduled explicitly rather than expected at the end. Cleaning time that depends on finishing early never happens on a busy shift, which is exactly when the plant most needs it. Building a short fixed period into the shift pattern, and into the capacity plan, makes it real. If the plan cannot accommodate it, that is a genuine resourcing decision and should be taken openly rather than left as an instruction nobody can follow.
- Does housekeeping really affect product quality?
- Directly, in more sectors than people expect. Airborne dust settles into wet coatings and adhesives, swarf transfers between fixtures, contaminated containers carry residues into the next batch, and dirty inspection surfaces hide defects. In food, pharmaceutical and electronics production the link is formalised in the hygiene or contamination-control regime. Elsewhere it shows up as intermittent defects nobody can reproduce, which is one of the more expensive kinds of quality problem to chase.
