Most warehouse injuries are not dramatic. They accumulate through thousands of ordinary movements performed slightly wrongly, and they surface as back and shoulder complaints that end careers rather than shifts. Ergonomics is the practice of arranging the work so those movements stay within what a body tolerates, and it belongs in slotting decisions and bench layouts rather than in an annual briefing.

The comfortable band is narrower than it looks
Handling is safest between roughly knuckle and shoulder height, close to the body and without twisting. Below that band the load is lifted from a stoop; above it, it is lifted with extended arms and no view of the contents. Because that band is limited, it should be allocated deliberately to the heaviest and most frequently handled items, which makes it a slotting decision rather than a matter of individual technique.
Frequency multiplies every fault
A lift that is slightly awkward is harmless once and damaging when repeated all day. That is why assessment has to consider how often a task occurs, how long it continues without a break in the pattern, and whether the operator can vary posture at all. It is also why the fast-moving lines deserve most of the attention: the very items chosen for speed are the ones subjecting people to the greatest cumulative load.
Workstations should adjust to the person
Fixed-height benches suit one body and inconvenience everybody else, so height adjustment, a screen positioned to be read without leaning, materials within reach without twisting, and matting where people stand still are all sensible baselines. The same reasoning applies inside truck cabs and at consolidation walls. These changes are inexpensive relative to a single long-term absence, and they usually improve output as a side effect.
An aid has to be quicker than not using it
Lift assists, vacuum handlers, tilters, scissor tables and conveyors are only used when they save the operator effort in the moment; anything that adds steps will be bypassed under pressure and then blamed on the individual. Choosing devices with the people who will use them, and positioning them exactly where the work happens rather than in a central store, is what determines whether they are adopted. An unused aid is worse than none, because it creates a false sense that the hazard is controlled.
Rotation, pace and the effect of incentives
Varying tasks through a shift spreads load across different muscle groups and gives attention a rest, which improves both injury rates and error rates. Piece-rate schemes and aggressive individual targets work in the opposite direction, because they reward shortcuts precisely where the hazard lives. Where pace targets exist, they need to be set from measured work in the actual layout, with realistic allowances, and reviewed when the layout or the product changes.

- On its own, very little. Technique degrades under time pressure and fatigue, so the durable improvements come from changing what has to be lifted, how often, from what height and with what assistance, with training supporting those changes rather than substituting for them.
